Stop โselling.โ Start influencing
Does the word โsalesโ make you cringe?
For most independent consultants, โsellingโ is the worst part of the job. It feels pushy, inauthentic, and desperate. They are experts in their field, not โclosers.โ
We just want to do the work. But to get the work, weโre told we have to sell.
This creates a painful dynamic. We show up to a prospect meeting, put on our โsalespersonโ hat, and pitch our services. We talk about our experience, our methodology, and our credentials.
In doing so, we make a critical mistake: We position ourselves as a vendor.
Weโre just a pair of hands for hire. The client holds all the power, and their only real variable for deciding is price.
The most successful consultants I know have a secret: They never โsell.โ
They donโt pitch. They donโt persuade. They donโt โhandle objections.โ
Instead, they influence. They use their expertise to reframe the clientโs problem and guide them to a solution. This is the art of โQuiet Influence,โ and itโs a game-changer for winning high-value clients.
Here are three ways to stop selling and start influencing in your very next prospect call.
1. The Power of the โDiagnosticโ
A vendor takes an order. An advisor writes a prescription.
When a prospect tells you what they โneedโ (e.g., โWe need you to build us a new dashboardโ), a vendor says, โOkay, I can do that.โ
An advisor says, โTell me more. Why a dashboard? What problem are you trying to solve that you canโt solve now? What decision will this dashboard allow you to make?โ
This is the โDiagnosticโ phase. Your goal is not to talk about yourself. It is to become obsessively curious about their problem. By asking insightful, expert questions, you are doing two things:
- Uncovering theย real, high-value problem (which is oftenย notย what they first asked for).
- Proving your expertise without ever having to say, โIโm an expert.โ
Your questions are the demo.
2. Lead from Behind (Let Them Have the Idea)
When youโre a subject-matter expert, itโs tempting to jump in and say, โI see the problem. Hereโs what you need to do.โ
The moment you do that, you invite resistance. The clientโs ego kicks in. โWhat if that doesnโt work?โ โWho are you to tell me how to run my business?โ
โQuiet Influenceโ means guiding the conversation so the client โdiscoversโ the solution themselves.
- Donโt say:ย โYou need to fix your onboarding process first.โ
- Instead, ask:ย โIt sounds like youโre losing all your new hires in the first 90 days. What do you think would happen to your retention goals if we focusedย allย our energy on that one problem first?โ
By framing the path forward as a question, youโre not issuing a command; youโre inviting collaboration. Youโre letting them โhaveโ the idea. And people always support a solution they helped create.
3. Sell the Diagnosis, Not the Cure
The most valuable thing you offer a client isnโt the final deliverable. Itโs your thinking. Itโs your ability to see their problem more clearly than they can.
So, in the โsalesโ process, give your thinking away.
Instead of sending a proposal that just lists โ50 hours of work,โ send a document that diagnoses their problem.
- โHere is my understanding of your situation.โ
- โHere is the core problem Iโve identified, which is costing you [X].โ
- โHere are the three options I see for solving it.โ
This document (or presentation) proves youโre the right person for the job before theyโve even seen the price. Youโre not selling your time; youโre selling your clarity.
The Advisor is the One Who Asks the Questions
This trust-based, diagnostic approach is the core of Quiet Influence. Itโs what moves you from โvendorโ to โtrusted advisor.โ
When youโre an advisor, youโre not โselling.โ Youโre consulting. The sales call is the work. Clients stop haggling over your hourly rate because theyโve already experienced the value of your mind.
This is how you win better clients, at higher fees, with zero โsalesyโ tactics.
If youโre a professional who wants to win clients authentically, this framework is for you. Iโve detailed the entire step-by-step process in my book, Quiet Influence.
Itโs one of the five guides in โThe Smart Professionalโs Short Guide Series,โ designed to give you the exact skills you need to build a thriving, authentic practice.
